Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has defended his party's participation in a broad-based arrangement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), stating that it is a deliberate move with a clear plan. He emphasized that this arrangement should not be mistaken for a coalition, as the two parties have each nominated five representatives to negotiate and draw up a coalition agreement ahead of ODM's possible support for President William Ruto's re-election in 2027.

The ODM leader made these remarks through a video link during a rally at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, held to mark the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Raila, who led ODM for nearly two decades, passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India. Oburu, who has been battling health challenges, thanked supporters for their messages wishing him a speedy recovery and expressed hope to rejoin them soon.

Oburu described ODM as Kenya's largest political party, with an identity and influence built over many years, not attributable to one individual. He also highlighted that Raila's rise to the party leadership was not solely due to family ties, but his own efforts. If family ties determined leadership, Oburu noted that he would have been the one leading the party.

The ODM leader praised his late brother for standing up against oppression and stated that ODM's month-long activities in October aimed to commemorate his death and celebrate his legacy. He encouraged Kenyans to continue fighting for their freedom, emphasizing that ODM's participation in the broad-based government is conscious and not blind.

Oburu reiterated that the broad-based arrangement is not a coalition and cannot operate as one, as ODM would not enter a formal coalition without negotiations and an agreement. He described the current pact as a loose agreement on the way forward. The rally was led by ODM chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, alongside deputy party leaders Abdulswamad Nassir and Simba Arati.

Cabinet Secretaries Hassan Joho and John Mbadi attended the rally, alongside elected leaders from the National Assembly and Senate. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja also used the rally to appeal to residents to re-elect him for a second term. The event was a show of unity and strength for ODM, with various leaders in attendance.

Oburu's clarification on the broad-based arrangement comes amid growing interest in the country's politics, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching. The ODM leader's message emphasized the party's commitment to negotiations and a clear plan, rather than a blind deal. This development will likely have implications for the country's political landscape in the coming months.
