Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has promised to declare an immediate state of emergency on corruption, education, and power generation if elected president in 2027. He made this pledge during a public engagement and town hall meeting in Enugu State, as part of his nationwide tour. Obi emphasized the need for a competent, energetic, and compassionate leader to steer Nigeria towards security and economic recovery.
Obi outlined his vision for Nigeria, stating that the presidency demands physical stamina, total commitment, and direct grassroots engagement. He assured Nigerians that he would unite the country, secure it, and deal decisively with insecurity. Obi also promised to lead security efforts from the frontlines alongside security operatives, saying he would not shy away from taking risks to protect Nigerians.
On corruption, Obi emphasized that public funds must serve public interests, and transparent accountability would be the cornerstone of his administration. He promised that his government would be accountable and open, with clear explanations for borrowing and spending public funds. Obi also vowed to declare an emergency in education and ensure adequate healthcare, with primary healthcare centers established in every ward across Nigeria.
Obi's vision for Nigeria's energy sector includes generating, transmitting, and distributing at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity to drive industrial work. He also took a swipe at the current administration, challenging them to account for their tenure and extensive foreign travels. Obi questioned the tangible impact of international trips and foreign loans on the average Nigerian.
The NDC presidential candidate urged political opponents to match his nationwide mobilisation strategy by interacting directly with citizens rather than relying on distant platforms. He challenged them to move across the country and tell Nigerians what they plan to do if elected. Obi also urged the electorate to protect their votes and carefully evaluate candidates based on competence, capacity, and genuine commitment to national transformation.
Obi's vision is to build a society where every child, regardless of background, can aspire to greatness. He aims to move Nigeria from consumption to production, assuring supporters that their sacrifice would not be in vain. Renowned economist and political activist Prof. Pat Utomi supported Obi's vision, saying Nigeria would become one of the greatest places to live with the right leadership.
Other speakers at the event, including Senator Victor Umeh and Enugu State governorship candidate Chinyeaka Ohaa, commended Obi's leadership and urged Nigerians to seize the opportunity to build a new Nigeria founded on justice, competence, accountability, security, and prosperity for all. They emphasized that the 2027 election is not about an Igbo presidency but about building a new Nigeria that works for everyone.
