The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has undergone significant reforms in the last two years, transforming from a manual, top-heavy institution to a more digital, efficient, and accountable one. According to the Managing Director, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, this transformation was necessary to address the Fund's previous reliance on manual processes and structural imbalances. The reforms aim to modernize institutional processes and improve the overall performance of the Fund.

When the current management assumed office in July 2024, they inherited an institution with significant challenges, including career stagnation, gaps in deployment of people and resources, and a need for modernization. Faleye noted that the management had to confront these realities honestly as the starting point for reform. To address these issues, the Fund conducted a comprehensive staff audit, which provided an objective assessment of its workforce structure and organizational needs.

As part of its digital transformation journey, the NSITF has commenced the implementation of integrated and responsive systems, while addressing structural imbalances through a Voluntary Exit Exercise. This exercise aimed to create a leaner, more functional organization with clearer responsibilities and renewed room for career progression. The Fund has also relocated its Operations Directorate to the Mukhtar El-Yakub Building and is renovating branches across the country.

The NSITF is also improving its work environment and tools, with furniture, ICT equipment, printers, and transportation capacity being deployed progressively. Additionally, the Fund is providing sustained capacity building for its staff. These reforms have already led to expanded coverage for Nigerian workers, with the Fund successfully onboarding treasury-funded Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and commencing payment of claims.

The Fund has already paid compensation to the first batch of five beneficiaries, with more states and Federal MDAs in the process of being onboarded. The NSITF is at an advanced stage of engagement with the Lagos State Government and Taraba State Government, while discussions with other states are progressing. Partnerships with several Federal MDAs and regional organizations are also being strengthened to deepen coverage of the Employees' Compensation Scheme.

Despite the progress made, Faleye acknowledged that the Fund is still a work in progress, with much work to be done in expanding coverage to the informal workforce, strengthening compliance, improving data and digital integration, and enhancing claims administration. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to accelerate reforms and strengthen Nigeria's social protection architecture.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Kamil A. Shoretire, commended the NSITF management for its bold reforms and visible improvements, pledging the ministry's continued support to strengthen the nation's social security system. He called for collaboration between the Fund and sister agencies to include the informal sector in the coverage of the Employees' Compensation Scheme and emphasized the importance of preventive programs for safety in workplaces.
