The Algerian academic year 2026-2027 commenced on Tuesday with nearly 2 million students enrolling in various universities and institutes across the country. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has made available all necessary human and material resources to support 1,884,839 students. The total number of university students includes 2,600 international students from 36 different nationalities who have benefited from the "Study in Algeria" program. The efforts are in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who emphasizes the crucial role universities play in producing knowledge and developing technology.
The Algerian university system is focusing on areas of excellence such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energies, biotechnology, entrepreneurship, and innovation. These areas are part of a new phase aimed at creating a "smart university" that produces knowledge and wealth. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has introduced several new programs and projects to enhance the quality of education and research.
One of the key initiatives is the introduction of a personalized educational pathway for students, supported by artificial intelligence technologies. This allows students to build a customized educational path that aligns with their ambitions. Additionally, a new intelligent linguistic model has been developed to assist university professors in preparing exercises and pedagogical activities.
The new academic year also sees the introduction of 13 new specialties related to future professions, including a state engineering degree in artificial intelligence and a master's degree in quantitative technologies. Furthermore, the Ministry has revised programs in management sciences, economic sciences, and human sciences to make them more flexible and relevant to current needs.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, new specialties have been introduced in medicine and health sciences, including a license in dental health and hygiene, and a master's degree in genetic counseling. The Algerian university system is also placing emphasis on promoting national identity and culture, with new programs in media and communication in the Amazigh language.
The new academic year is characterized by a strong focus on digitalization and the use of digital solutions in university management and services. The education and scientific research sector is being supported by 74 digital platforms, which is a key aspect of the transition to a fourth-generation university that is open to its economic and social environment.
