The Nigerien government has officially launched the enrollment process for the Alliance des États du Sahel (AES) biometric national identity card in the Diffa region. The launch ceremony took place on September 29, 2026, at the Diffa Regional Police Directorate, attended by regional and local authorities.
The ceremony was led by Secrétaire général de la région de Diffa, Attahirou Mahamadou Maidouka, who was the first to undergo the enrollment process, marking the official start of the operation in the region. He expressed satisfaction with the availability of equipment and the preparedness of the services responsible for conducting the operation.
During the ceremony, Maidouka reassured the people of Diffa that the operations had begun and invited them to approach the competent services to complete the required formalities. He emphasized that the process would enable residents to obtain the biometric identity card, which is a crucial document for identification purposes.
Officer Garba Maman Sani from the Diffa Regional Police Directorate explained the procedures and modalities for obtaining the AES biometric national identity card. He stated that the process begins with the registration of applicants and the collection of necessary data for the establishment of the card, followed by the issuance of a receipt.
According to Officer Sani, the receipt is an essential document for tracking the application, pending the production and availability of the final card. He advised applicants to keep the receipt safely until they collect their cards. The officer also outlined two procedures for card delivery: a normal procedure and an express procedure, with different deadlines.
The Diffa region's enrollment process may have a longer turnaround time compared to Niamey, due to the distance between Diffa and the capital, where the cards are produced. Applicants in Diffa can expect a delay in receiving their cards, which will be produced in Niamey and then transported to the region.
