The head of the National Chamber of Poultry and White Meat Traders, Ibrahim Nefzawi, has stated that the supply of poultry products in Tunisia is proceeding normally, with no indications of a potential crisis in the sector. He made these comments in a statement to Express FM radio on September 29, 2026. Nefzawi emphasized that discussions about linking poultry consumption to specific seasons or events, or anticipating shortages during certain months, are not supported by precise data.
According to Nefzawi, the numbers related to production and supply confirm that there are sufficient quantities to meet market demands. He provided details on the planned quantities of ready-to-cook chicken for the upcoming months: 1,680 tons in October, 5,800 tons in November, and approximately 6,120 tons in December. The industry is working to secure the necessary stock to prevent any disruptions in the market. Nefzawi also confirmed that chicken, scallops, and eggs will be available in the coming months.
Nefzawi reported that the price of live chicken recently reached around 5 dinars and 300 millimes per kilogram, with price variations depending on the market. The price of ready-to-cook chicken is set at 7 dinars and 900 millimes per kilogram among suppliers, while it is sold to consumers at around 8 dinars and 950 millimes per kilogram at points of sale. He also noted that the price of scallops at organized points of sale does not exceed 20 dinars per kilogram.
The National Chamber of Poultry and White Meat Traders is working with major companies and points of sale to ensure adherence to agreed-upon prices. Nefzawi emphasized that the chamber coordinates with the General Directorate of Trade, the Joint Professional Association, the Ministry of Agriculture, and other relevant structures to address any issues or shortages that may arise. This coordination aims to maintain market stability and prevent disruptions in the supply of poultry products.
As the year-end and holidays approach, which typically see a rise in demand for poultry, Nefzawi stated that preparations have begun early. The industry is working to build stockpiles that will last for a month or a month and a half. Additionally, efforts are being made to secure supplies for the month of Ramadan and to build stockpiles for the tourist season, ensuring that supply is not limited to daily production.
Nefzawi called on citizens to purchase poultry from organized points of sale and to avoid random slaughter. He noted that 50% of national production goes through the random slaughter pathway, while the other 50% goes through the organized distribution pathway. By encouraging purchases from organized points of sale, the industry aims to improve the tracking and safety of poultry products.
