A new school complex has been inaugurated at the Kitona military base in the Kongo-Central province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The complex, named "Maman Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi", was opened on October 1, 2026, and is designed to provide education for children of military personnel. The complex was built in just seven months and will accommodate over 2,000 students.
The school complex was built on an area of 2,880 square meters and consists of four main components: two buildings with 12 classrooms, an administrative building, and sanitation facilities. The complex will operate in two shifts to cater to the large number of students. The construction of the complex was initiated by Guy Kabombo, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of National Defense and Veterans.
The Deputy Prime Minister had previously visited the Kitona military base in 2025 and was dismayed by the poor conditions in which children of military personnel were being educated. He had promised to provide a modern school infrastructure to address the issue. The new complex is expected to provide a better learning environment for the children.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant-General Marcel Mbangou, Commander of the Kitona military base. He praised the Deputy Prime Minister for fulfilling his promise and described the new school as a "therapeutic educational facility" that would address the challenges faced by children of military personnel in accessing quality education.
To support the students, Deputy Prime Minister Guy Kabombo also provided over 500 school kits, which include bags, notebooks, shoes, pens, and other school supplies. The kits are intended to help the students start the new academic year in a better environment. The initiative is part of the government's efforts to promote access to quality education.
The modernization of school infrastructure for children of military personnel is part of the vision of President Felix Tshisekedi, Commander-in-Chief of the DRC Armed Forces. The initiative aims to promote access to quality education and consolidate the free primary education policy, which is considered a foundation for the country's development and future.
The new school complex has been welcomed by the wives of military personnel, who see it as a relief and a source of hope for their children. The complex is expected to make a positive impact on the education and well-being of the children of military personnel in the region.
