Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, has emphasized the need for the newly elected national executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritize unity within the party. According to him, this can be achieved by harmonizing the various parts of the constituencies that make up the party, including geographical constituencies and various groups and bodies. He made these comments on JoyFM's SMS on Monday, 5th October, following the party’s national delegates conference over the weekend.

Prof Oquaye identified closer coordination among the NPP’s various groups as a key task for the new leadership. He explained that the leadership’s responsibilities extended beyond bringing geographical constituencies together to ensuring that the different groups within the party worked in harmony. This, he believes, will help address the problems that the party faced in the 2024 general election, which led to the NPP's defeat.

The needs of young people and women were also identified as priorities that required practical plans. Prof Oquaye maintained that efforts to support these groups should be backed by concrete measures. He stated that the party needs to have serious working plans for the people of Ghana, particularly in catering to the needs of the youth and women.

Prof Oquaye's comments came in response to a question about the challenges the new executives should address, drawing on the findings of the committee he chaired to review the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general election. He said the incoming leadership would engage relevant party figures on the next phase of implementing the committee’s recommendations.

The new NPP executives will have to work on implementing the recommendations of the committee, which Prof Oquaye chaired. He said those who are in office now are also immediately going to have a meeting with all the relevant persons towards the implementation of the next stage. This move is expected to help the party move forward and address its challenges.

The NPP held a national delegates conference over the weekend, where new national executives were elected. One of the newly elected executives, John Boadu, has pledged unity and reconciliation as he takes over as NPP National Chairman. This pledge aligns with Prof Oquaye's call for the party to prioritize unity.

The NPP's implementation of the 2024 election review recommendations is ongoing, with Prof Mike Oquaye indicating that the party is working in stages to address its challenges. The party's efforts to address the needs of young people and women, as well as its plans for unity, are expected to be crucial in its future success.
