Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has inaugurated the 5.2-kilometre Akwanga-Jos bypass in Akwanga Local Government Area. The governor described the road as a strategic intervention to decongest Akwanga town and boost economic activities. He explained that the bypass had reduced travel time for those coming from Keffi or Gudi to Jos and curbed incessant accidents in the town.
The governor commended the contractor for delivering the project on schedule and within specifications. He promised to install solar street lights on the road to ensure motorists' safety at night. The bypass was built to the same standard as the federal highway to withstand heavy-duty vehicles. Sule assured that his administration would sustain its drive on urban and rural roads across the state's 13 local government areas.
In addition to the bypass, the governor inaugurated one-kilometre roads in Akwanga, Nasarawa-Eggon, and Wamba local government areas. These roads were constructed by their respective chairmen as part of activities to mark the state's 30th anniversary. The chairmen appreciated the governor for granting autonomy to local government areas and promised to execute more projects that would impact the lives of people at the grassroots.
The Deputy Governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, noted that the anniversary celebrations would begin with Juma’at Prayers at the Old Secretariat Juma’at Mosque. The celebrations would include project inaugurations, an interdenominational church service, visits to correctional facilities, and an Inter-State Novelty Football Match between Plateau and Nasarawa.
Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Yakuba Kwanta, said the bypass would stimulate new settlements and commercial activities along the corridor. A top royal father in the area, the Chun Mada, Samson Gamu-Yare, appreciated the governor for the intervention, noting that the bypass would end the nightmare motorists and residents face daily in Akwanga.
The event was attended by Senator Danladi Halilu-Envulanza, traditional rulers, commissioners, leaders of the All Progressives Congress, and residents of the areas. The governor's inauguration of the bypass and other roads is part of the state's efforts to improve infrastructure and promote economic growth.
The 30th anniversary celebrations of Nasarawa State's creation will feature various events, including an Award of Distinction and an Independence Day Celebration. The deputy governor emphasized that the celebration is about the people, their cultures, and their common identity, paying tribute to founding fathers, former and serving governors, and citizens who have contributed to the state's growth.
