The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) has introduced a six-month mentorship programme aimed at supporting the country's next generation of scientific leaders. The Research Leaders Mentorship (ReLM) Programme will match 25 young Nigerian researchers with 25 established scientists. This initiative seeks to enhance research capacity and provide early-career researchers with access to experienced mentors, professional guidance, and research networks. The programme targets postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers within seven years of completing their terminal degrees.

The ReLM Programme officially commenced with an orientation workshop on 7 September, as stated by Abubakar Sambo, President of NAS. The programme's structure involves pairing mentees with established researchers based on their research interests, career goals, and areas of discipline. Over six months, participants will engage in discussions on research progress, career development, challenges, and professional goals with their mentors. This mentorship aims to foster meaningful collaborations and support the growth of young researchers.

A key objective of the ReLM Programme is to address the challenges faced by early-career researchers in Nigeria. These challenges include limited access to experienced mentors, professional guidance, research networks, and opportunities for collaboration. By providing a supportive environment, NAS hopes to strengthen the capacity of young researchers to produce high-quality, society-relevant research. The programme also seeks to build a robust scientific community in Nigeria.

The mentorship programme will feature interactive sessions on various topics, including developing competitive research proposals, communicating scientific findings, navigating research careers, and building professional networks. These sessions are designed to equip young researchers with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their careers. By focusing on these areas, NAS aims to empower the next generation of Nigerian scientists.

NAS, as the foremost independent scientific body in Nigeria, is uniquely positioned to drive the country's scientific development. The academy is dedicated to bringing scientific knowledge to bear on Nigeria's policies and strategic direction. By investing in the growth of young researchers, NAS aims to advance science, technology, and innovation (STI) in Nigeria.

The ReLM Programme reflects NAS's commitment to developing and advancing STI in Nigeria. By providing a platform for young researchers to engage with experienced scientists, the programme seeks to create a lasting impact on the country's scientific landscape. The initiative is expected to yield positive outcomes, including enhanced research capacity and a stronger scientific community.

The success of the ReLM Programme will depend on the active participation of both mentees and mentors. By working together, young researchers and established scientists can build meaningful collaborations and drive innovation in Nigeria. The programme's impact will be closely monitored, and its outcomes are expected to contribute to the growth of a robust and vibrant scientific community in Nigeria.
