Johannesburg-based digital insurer Naked has entered the South African pet insurance market with premiums starting at R40 ($2.20) a month for cats and R55 for dogs. The company offers various coverage options, including accident-only, accident-and-illness, or comprehensive cover that includes physiotherapy and routine care. This move positions Naked to compete with established insurers such as OUTsurance, dotsure.co.za, Oneplan, MediPet, and PawPaw Pet Insurance.
Naked's pet insurance allows customers to select annual coverage limits ranging from R15,000 to R120,000 and use any registered veterinarian in South Africa. The insurer's covered treatments are subject to annual and per-claim limits rather than separate treatment-specific caps. According to the company, early claims data shows a median payment time of 1.3 days, with 60% of claims paid within 48 hours. About 29% of claims were paid within an hour of approval.
The company's AI-driven system enables automatic approval of eligible claims, even outside of office hours, according to co-founder Sumarie Greybe. Claims requiring additional information or human judgement are referred to Naked's team for review. A notable example cited by the company involves a customer whose dog swallowed a sock and required emergency treatment. The claim was submitted at 22:30, and the payment reached the customer's account at 22:50.
The South African pet insurance market is already served by several established players. OUTsurance advertises pet cover from around R65 a month, while dotsure.co.za offers premiums starting at R99. Oneplan, MediPet, and PawPaw also provide varying levels of veterinary expense cover, with premiums and benefits depending on the policy selected. Veterinary costs can quickly add up, making insurance a valuable consideration for pet owners.
Dr Erika Pienaar of Prime Pet Veterinary Day Clinic in Nelspruit highlighted the costs associated with veterinary care. A consultation at her practice costs R585, while surgery to remove an object swallowed by a dog can cost between R5,800 and R15,000. These expenses underscore the importance of pet insurance in helping owners manage unexpected veterinary bills.
Naked's entry into the pet insurance market expands its digital offering, which already includes car, home, household contents, and standalone-item insurance. Customers can obtain quotes, purchase policies, and submit claims through the company's app. This convenient, user-friendly approach may appeal to pet owners seeking affordable and accessible insurance options.
The introduction of Naked's pet insurance is likely to increase competition in the South African market, potentially driving innovation and better services. As the company continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how established insurers respond to the new competition and whether Naked's AI-driven approach will become a standard in the industry.
