Mzuzu City Council has initiated a K8.087 billion project to rehabilitate five key roads, aiming to enhance mobility for residents and goods within the city. This initiative is expected to alleviate congestion on main roads by creating bypasses. The project includes the rehabilitation of Botanic Road, Lisbon-Vigwagwa Road, Hilltop Road, Boardman Road, and St Denis Road, with additional upgrades planned for other roads in Mzuzu City North.

Mzuzu City Mayor Chiyembekezo Moses emphasized the importance of an improved road network for the city's development. He highlighted Botanic Road as a crucial bypass that will ease traffic flow. According to Moses, better roads will also benefit businesspeople by facilitating the easy transportation of goods to markets within the city, thereby boosting local commerce.

The project has garnered support from local legislators. Mzuzu City North legislator Mafumu Mkandawire noted that the rehabilitation will address long-standing challenges faced by communities due to poor road conditions. He expressed relief that Botanic Road, which has been in poor condition for a long time, will be rehabilitated, benefiting residents who frequently travel to Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Mzuzu South East legislator William Kaweche urged contractors to prioritize quality in their work to ensure the roads serve the community for an extended period. He emphasized that high-quality construction will reduce the need for frequent repairs and maintain the city's road infrastructure throughout all seasons.

Residents have expressed optimism about the project's impact on their daily lives. Hannah Ngwata, a resident of Botanic New Lines, noted that improved roads will ease mobility challenges, particularly during the rainy season. She added that poor road conditions often damage vehicles, forcing owners to incur additional expenses for repairs.

The rehabilitation project is being implemented by Mzuzu City Council with funding from the Roads Fund Administration and the Constituency Development Fund. The council aims to complete the project efficiently, ensuring that the benefits are realized by the community.

Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve the overall road network in Mzuzu City, enhancing accessibility and facilitating economic growth. The local community looks forward to the positive changes that the rehabilitated roads will bring, including reduced travel times and lower vehicle maintenance costs.
