Murang'a County is preparing for a massive tree planting challenge to mark Mazingira Day, with over 250,000 tree seedlings set to be planted in just one hour. The event, scheduled to take place on 97 acres of land at Delmonte and Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) in Gatanga sub-county, is part of a national environmental restoration drive. The challenge is expected to be attended by 6,700 people.
The tree planting exercise is part of the government's agenda to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 to address the effects of climate change, restore degraded ecosystems, and strengthen environmental resilience. County Commissioner Mr Hassan Bule stated that the week-long activities would bring together government agencies, learning institutions, private organisations, communities, and other stakeholders in a coordinated effort to increase tree cover and promote environmental conservation.
Murang'a University of Technology is set to play a key role in the tree planting exercise, with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dickson Nyariki stating that the institution is ready to work with the government and other stakeholders to ensure the county achieves its target. The university will mobilise its staff and students to support the tree-growing exercise, highlighting the important role institutions of higher learning have in promoting environmental awareness and practical conservation initiatives.
The preparations for the tree planting sites have been concluded, with several organisations donating seedlings to help mark the day. Land preparation in areas where the planting will take place has been completed, according to Mr Hassan. The weekly programme includes tree planting within schools, highways, and on farms, followed by a major town cleaning and a town clean-up exercise aimed at promoting proper waste management.
Murang'a is among the counties selected to participate in this national exercise, which aims to plant six million tree seedlings in an hour. The event is part of a broader effort to promote environmental conservation and restore degraded ecosystems. The county is expected to make a significant contribution to the national target of 15 billion trees by 2032.
