MTN Ghana has announced a three-year investment plan worth $1.1 billion to expand network capacity, improve service quality, and extend digital connectivity to underserved communities across the country. The investment plan is part of the company's 30th anniversary celebrations, themed "30 Years of Progress, Powered by You." This initiative aims to strengthen network coverage and resilience, with 500 new cell sites to be deployed nationwide this year.
The investment plan includes approximately $380 million for 2026, with a focus on improving service delivery and extending network coverage to all communities. General Manager of MTN Ghana, David Gyimah Boadi, announced this during the company’s Regional Media and Stakeholder Engagement in Koforidua on Monday, October 26, 2026. He acknowledged that the company had faced challenges in extending its network to all communities but said feedback from customers had driven improvements in service delivery.
Over the past three decades, MTN Ghana has evolved from a telecommunications provider into a digital platform supporting communication, business development, and financial inclusion. The company's focus goes beyond connectivity to ensuring that Ghanaians can use digital technology to improve their livelihoods and access economic opportunities. Mr. Boadi stressed that the growing role of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) in promoting financial inclusion has been significant.
The value of MoMo transactions increased by 44.4 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with active users growing by 3.1 per cent. Transaction volumes and MoMo revenue each increased by 23.3 per cent over the same period. The company will continue investing in cybersecurity and data protection to safeguard customers' funds and personal information as digital financial transactions expand.
Mr. Boadi urged customers to protect their PINs, passwords, and other personal details, emphasising that cybersecurity requires shared responsibility between service providers and users. He also highlighted the company's commitment to ethical business practices, citing its Ethics Week activities, which promote integrity, accountability, fraud prevention, and responsible conduct among employees.
MTN Ghana recorded strong financial results in the first half of 2026, with service revenue rising by 32.3 per cent to GH¢15 billion. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 47.1 per cent to GH¢9.3 billion, while the EBITDA margin improved to 61.8 per cent. Profit after tax also rose by 46.8 per cent to GH¢5.1 billion.
The company's financial performance provides the foundation for continued investment in infrastructure, job creation, support for local businesses, and social intervention programmes. Mr. Boadi explained that a sustainable business is necessary to maintain network investments and fund initiatives that benefit the community. The company paid GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes during the first half of the year, in addition to GH¢384.7 million in fees and levies.
