The Abia State Government has announced plans to host approximately 800 indigenes living abroad for the Abia State Diaspora Global Homecoming. The event, scheduled to take place from December 18 to 21, 2026, aims to provide a platform for diaspora participants to engage with the state government, farmers, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. This initiative seeks to explore investment opportunities and identify areas where diaspora indigenes can contribute their professional expertise to the development of Abia State.
According to Rev. Dr. Annie Onu, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Secretary of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, the homecoming will enable Abians living abroad to return home, assess the progress being made in the state, and identify opportunities to contribute their knowledge, skills, and resources to its development. The program is designed to strengthen relations between the state and its diaspora community, mobilize expertise, and promote partnerships that could support investment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.
The Abia State Diaspora Global Homecoming will bring Abians from different parts of the world together to demonstrate solidarity with their homeland, assess ongoing development initiatives, and explore areas of collaboration. Onu stated that the program will provide an opportunity for the diaspora community to interact with local entrepreneurs, organic farmers, and other stakeholders, exchange business ideas, and explore investment opportunities that can benefit Abia State.
The program's activities will begin on December 18 with a solidarity walk, followed by engagements with local content providers and organic farmers. These sessions are expected to encourage the exchange of business ideas and showcase locally produced goods. The grand finale, scheduled for December 21, will feature an interaction with Governor Alex Otti, during which diaspora participants will discuss potential areas of collaboration and offer suggestions on how they can contribute to the state's development.
Onu also mentioned that the program will provide opportunities for participants to identify locally produced goods with export potential and establish partnerships to expand their markets internationally. Examples of local produce that could benefit from improved processing, packaging, and access to foreign markets include food items, oil, and bitter leaf. The commission's chief executive expressed enthusiasm about the potential for collaboration and investment.
The proposed Abia Airport project is another area of interest to participants, who will explore ways of contributing to its development. Improved air connectivity could create new economic opportunities, attract investment, and strengthen links between Abia State and the international community. Onu urged residents to prepare to receive the returning indigenes warmly and use the occasion to exchange ideas that could promote community development.
The Abia State Diaspora Commission is committed to promoting the welfare and security of Abians living abroad, including assisting with their educational needs and providing guidance where necessary. The commission is working towards establishing chapters in locations with significant Abia diaspora populations to strengthen communication, improve engagement, and maintain closer ties between indigenes abroad and their home state.
