Statistics Mauritius, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has introduced 14 new modules to the MauStats platform. The enhancements aim to improve data collection, analysis, and dissemination capabilities. The new modules cover various economic areas, including consumer prices, import and export prices, agricultural and manufacturing production prices, construction costs, and residential property prices.
The MauStats platform now includes advanced features such as online surveys, artificial intelligence-assisted coding, and interfaces for exchanging data with other computer systems. These upgrades will enable users to produce high-quality statistics more efficiently. The platform's development is part of a broader effort to improve data accessibility and quality in Mauritius.
From October 19 to 28, Statistics Mauritius organized training sessions at the Labourdonnais Waterfront hotel to familiarize users with the new features. The sessions targeted users, data managers, and IT support staff. Participants learned about the different stages of statistical production, from data collection to publication.
The training sessions combined demonstrations and practical exercises to ensure that participants understood the new features. IT personnel received training on platform administration, technical problem-solving, system monitoring, and backup and recovery procedures. A specific module focused on tools for tracking Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators.
The enhancements address recommendations from Mauritius' voluntary national reviews for 2019-2024, which highlighted the need for improved data accessibility and quality. The MauStats platform will support the country's efforts to monitor progress toward the SDGs and prepare national and international reports.
According to Chettun Arianaick, acting director of Statistics Mauritius, reliable and up-to-date statistics are crucial for evaluating progress toward the SDGs. Sujitha Sekharan, acting head of the UNDP office for Mauritius and Seychelles, emphasized the importance of assessing the impact of development policies on the population, particularly in the context of climate change and economic vulnerabilities.
The MauStats platform is a critical tool for Mauritius, enabling the country to make data-driven decisions and track progress toward development goals. The UNDP collaboration has been instrumental in enhancing the platform's capabilities, and the new modules are expected to improve data quality and accessibility.
