Police in Jigawa State have arrested a 20-year-old man, Lawisi Safiyanu, for allegedly stabbing one Muhammad Abba to death over a N500 debt. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the incident occurred at about 12:30am on October 1, 2026, at Chamo village, Dutse Local Government Area. The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had purchased a mobile handset from the suspect for N1,500.

The victim had paid N1,000, but still owed the suspect N500. A disagreement reportedly ensued over the outstanding N500, during which the suspect allegedly used a knife to stab the victim. Abba was rushed to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, for medical attention, but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment. The police said the suspect was arrested and the knife allegedly used in the incident was recovered as an exhibit.

The police said investigation into the case had been completed and the suspect charged to court to face prosecution. This incident is part of a series of events that have raised concerns about the rising levels of violence and crime in the state. The police have been working to address these concerns and ensure that offenders are brought to justice.

In a separate incident, the Command said it arrested a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, who allegedly entered the residence of his elder brother, 25-year-old Basiru Shuaibu, and poured petrol inside his room before setting it ablaze. The incident reportedly left Basiru and his wife with serious burns. The victims were taken by relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment.

Basiru later succumbed to his injuries and died while receiving treatment. The police said operatives subsequently commenced investigation and arrested the suspect at Sara town in Gwaram LGA. The suspect, who reportedly claimed to be of unsound mind, is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Dutse.

The suspect has been arraigned before a court for prosecution. The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. He also advised members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.

The commissioner assured residents of the command’s commitment to taking firm action against criminal activities and ensuring that offenders are brought before the law. The police are working to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and to maintain peace and order in the state.
