On a recent day, Mali's President Assimi Goïta hosted a meeting with a delegation from the Russian company Kamaz, led by its Director General, Vasily Tsyganov. The meeting, held at the Malian delegation's hotel, was attended by several government ministers, including Alousséni Sanou, Moussa Alassane Diallo, Pr Amadou Keïta, and Mme Dembélé Madina Sissoko. The talks focused on a major transport project aimed at bolstering Mali's supply lines.
The project involves the acquisition of a varied fleet of vehicles, including urban buses, trucks, tanker trucks, and military equipment. This initiative is crucial for Mali, a landlocked country, as it seeks to secure its supply lines through its new Société malienne de transport et de logistique (ESMTL). The discussions with President Goïta centered on the implementation of the contract, with a roadmap reportedly in place and being respected by both parties.
According to Mme Dembélé Madina Sissoko, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, the project involves close collaboration between the Ministries of Economy and Transport with Kamaz to ensure a smooth rollout. The project also includes a significant technical component, with training programs for local ESMTL teams, including drivers, mechanics, and engineers. This comprehensive approach aims to build local capacity and expertise.
Vasily Tsyganov expressed his gratitude to President Goïta for the confidence placed in Kamaz and hinted at future plans, including the potential establishment of a maintenance center or even an assembly unit in Mali. This would position the country as a hub for Kamaz in West Africa, reflecting Russia's ambition to translate diplomatic overtures into concrete industrial contracts on the continent.
The meeting between President Goïta and the Kamaz delegation took place on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, where Mali has signed strategic contracts with Russian entities, including Zarubezhgeologia, for the mapping of its subsoil. These agreements underscore the growing cooperation between Mali and Russia in various sectors.
The Russia-Africa Summit, attended by 22 heads of state and government, including President Goïta, aims to strengthen economic and humanitarian ties between Russia and African nations. The summit features discussions on investment projects, with Russia's Vice-Premier Minister, Alexandre Novak, announcing potential investments of several billion dollars in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
The partnership between Mali and Kamaz has the potential to significantly impact the country's economic development, particularly in the transport and logistics sector. With the implementation of this project, Mali aims to enhance its supply chain security and stimulate economic growth, aligning with the goals of the Confédération des États du Sahel (AES).
