Farmers in Traditional Authority Malemia, Nsanje District, Malawi, are calling for support to enhance their irrigation capabilities. The Irrigation Scheme in the area currently underutilizes 30 hectares of land, cultivating only 15 hectares due to insufficient irrigation equipment. Mzinga Mulaphandevu, chairperson of the scheme, expressed gratitude to Concern Worldwide for providing a mobile solar-powered pump. However, he emphasized the need for additional support, particularly solar-powered water pumps, to expand irrigation and improve crop yields.

Mulaphandevu highlighted the importance of irrigation in ensuring a stable food supply, contrasting it with the unpredictability of rainfall. He stressed that irrigation is crucial for harvesting food, unlike relying on rains that can be erratic. The scheme has become a vital source of food and income for local farmers. Gloria Genti from Chipwembwe Village reported harvesting 12 to 16 bags of maize, 10 bags of rice, and five bags of beans, and also grows crops like beans and vegetables.

Mercy Goliati from Lazao Village noted that using a mobile solar-powered pump system is labor-intensive and not conducive to modern irrigation practices. Despite this, the scheme has made a significant impact on the lives of farmers in the area. The farmers are eager to utilize the entire scheme but are hindered by a lack of equipment. Previously, they used watering cans to water their crops until Concern Worldwide provided the mobile solar-powered pump system.

Collins Walasi, Zunde Extension Planning Area extension agriculture development officer, confirmed that farmers in the area are willing and able to utilize the entire scheme but lack the necessary equipment. He acknowledged the recent support from Concern Worldwide but emphasized that more needs to be done to ensure the scheme reaches its full potential. The farmers' reliance on rainfall has resulted in inconsistent crop yields, making irrigation a vital component of their agricultural activities.

The irrigation scheme has not only provided food but also become a source of income for farmers in the area. With adequate support and equipment, farmers are optimistic about increasing their production and improving their livelihoods. The appeal for irrigation equipment highlights the challenges faced by farmers in Malawi, particularly in rural areas where access to resources and technology can be limited.

The need for irrigation equipment is critical in Malawi, where agriculture is a significant sector of the economy. The country's reliance on rainfall makes it vulnerable to climate-related shocks, affecting food security and agricultural production. The Irrigation Scheme in Nsanje District is a prime example of the efforts being made to mitigate these challenges and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

The farmers' appeal for support has highlighted the importance of partnerships between local organizations, government agencies, and international organizations like Concern Worldwide. Such collaborations can play a vital role in addressing the challenges faced by farmers in Malawi and promoting agricultural development. With the right support and equipment, farmers in the Irrigation Scheme can increase their production, improve their livelihoods, and contribute to the country's food security.
