The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, has assured that access to life-saving medical support under the initiative will not be determined by political affiliation. Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku made this statement during a stakeholder engagement at the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council. The engagement marked the beginning of the Fund's stakeholder sensitisation tour in the Greater Accra Region, hosted by Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo.
Mahama Cares operates on a strictly non-partisan basis, particularly where health and human life are concerned. According to Darko-Opoku, healthcare assistance will be determined by medical needs rather than political affiliations. She emphasized that there's nothing political about the initiative and that it aims to provide meaningful healthcare support to Ghanaians. The Fund will not allow political considerations to influence decisions concerning the lives and wellbeing of Ghanaians.
Qualified medical professionals will play a key role in assessing patients and determining those who qualify for support. This approach aims to protect vulnerable patients and their families from discrimination based on their political backgrounds. The Fund's operations will remain aligned with its core objective of providing healthcare support to Ghanaians. Beyond settling individual medical bills, Mahama Cares also seeks to strengthen public healthcare facilities through critical equipment and infrastructure provision.
The Fund has identified the need for functional CT scanners, MRI machines, and mammography units, particularly in response to the growing burden of chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer and kidney disease. Darko-Opoku stated that the Fund will pursue strategic partnerships with private-sector organisations to improve diagnostic and treatment capacity in public hospitals. One such partnership is a $10 million commitment from the KGL Group towards constructing a modern Diagnostic and Imaging Centre at Ridge Hospital.
The Greater Accra engagement is part of Mahama Cares' nationwide sensitisation campaign aimed at reducing the financial burden associated with specialised treatment for chronic diseases. The initiative will provide financial support for specialised healthcare services not adequately covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), creating an additional safety net for vulnerable patients. The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is undertaking a 16-region sensitisation tour.
The sensitisation tour focuses on strengthening healthcare institutions, improving transparency, using clinical data to guide decisions, and promoting fair access to specialised healthcare across the country. Mahama Cares seeks to provide an additional layer of support for patients with chronic diseases, ensuring that they receive necessary medical care without facing financial hardship. The initiative has already garnered support from various stakeholders and private-sector organisations.
As the Mahama Cares initiative continues its nationwide sensitisation tour, it aims to engage with stakeholders and promote fair access to specialised healthcare. With its commitment to non-partisan medical support, the initiative seeks to make a positive impact on the lives of Ghanaians. Key partnerships and collaborations will be crucial in achieving this goal, ensuring that patients receive the necessary medical care without facing financial hardship or discrimination.
