Libya, as chair of the Arab Group at the UN for October, led a joint coordination meeting between the Arab Group and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The meeting, held at the level of deputy permanent representatives, aimed to mobilize international support and coordinate common political positions on a package of crucial resolutions related to the Palestinian issue. These resolutions were set to be discussed and voted on during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting was co-chaired by Libyan diplomat Essam Mohamed Al-Qaffa and his Turkish counterpart, representing the current chair of the Islamic Group. The gathering saw broad participation from member states, reflecting Arab and Islamic countries' commitment to unity and active diplomacy on the international stage in support of Palestinian rights. Participants were briefed by Palestinian diplomat Majed Bamieh on the nature and content of the proposed resolutions.
The package of resolutions addresses key issues, including providing necessary protection and support to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This is in the face of hostile Israeli legislation aimed at undermining the agency's activities, as well as condemnation of repeated attacks on its centers and staff. The resolutions also emphasize the rights of Palestinian refugees to their properties and returns, in accordance with international legitimacy.
The meeting also extensively discussed a resolution on settlement, which includes strong warnings about the catastrophic consequences of the Israeli settlement project known as E1. This project aims to isolate Jerusalem from its geographic and demographic Palestinian surroundings, based on the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice.
The Libyan delegation reaffirmed Libya's unwavering stance in support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people's struggle until they achieve their legitimate aspirations and recover their full historical rights. The meeting showcased the active role Libya is playing in rallying Arab and Islamic support for Palestinian rights at the UN.
The coordination meeting demonstrates the efforts of Arab and Islamic countries to present a unified front in support of the Palestinian cause. This comes amid significant developments and escalating tensions in the occupied territories. The participation of various countries in the meeting underscores their commitment to backing Palestinian rights through diplomatic channels.
The Libyan initiative to lead this diplomatic push highlights the country's role in championing the Palestinian cause within international forums. By mobilizing support for these critical resolutions, Libya and its Arab and Islamic counterparts aim to ensure that Palestinian voices are heard and their rights are upheld at the UN.
