King Mohammed VI of Morocco recently presided over a working session to review the progress of two major port projects: Nador West Med and Tanger Med 3. The meeting, held at the Royal Palace in Rabat, was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Interior, Minister of Economy and Finance, and the president of the Board of Directors of Nador West Med. The King was briefed on the current state of the projects and their future development.
The Nador West Med project, which has mobilized 54 billion dirhams in public and private investments, aims to develop a port and industrial complex that will enhance Morocco's logistical, industrial, and energy positioning. The project's first container terminal is expected to enter operation soon, with a capacity of 3.5 million containers. A second terminal, with a capacity of 1.8 million containers, is scheduled to come online in April 2027. The project also includes an energy component, with a hydrocarbon terminal and a liquefied natural gas terminal.
The Tanger Med 3 project involves the extension of the existing Tanger Med complex, with the launch of a new port that will have a capacity of 4.5 million containers per year. The project, which will require an investment of 8 billion dirhams, will be developed in partnership with Maersk-APM, a leading global shipping company. The new port will feature 1,200 meters of quays and will be located west of Tanger Med 2.
The development of these port complexes is part of Morocco's strategy to enhance its competitiveness and strengthen its position as a major player in the global economy. The projects are expected to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, and to stimulate economic growth in the regions where they are located. The King emphasized the importance of ensuring that the economic and social benefits of these projects are shared by the local populations.
The Nador West Med complex will also feature an industrial zone, which is already operational and hosts one factory, with three others under construction. The zone is expected to create new opportunities for employment and professional insertion. The project's development is being supported by the construction of new infrastructure, including a railway line and a highway.
The meeting was also attended by Fouad Ali El Himma, Advisor to the King, and other high-ranking officials. The King stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of training programs adapted to the needs of emerging activities, in order to promote the professional insertion of young people. The development of these port complexes is expected to have a significant impact on Morocco's economy and to contribute to the country's growth and development.
The successful implementation of these projects will enable Morocco to strengthen its position as a major player in the global economy and to improve its competitiveness. The King emphasized the importance of ensuring that the benefits of these projects are shared by all regions concerned and that they lead to tangible improvements for local populations.
