Chadema Central Committee member Godbless Lema has shared a memorable experience with Advocate Alute Mughwai Lissu, who recently passed away. Lema recalled that in 2012, Alute and his younger brother, Tundu Lissu, appeared in court on opposing sides of a case involving the revocation of Lema's parliamentary seat. Alute represented the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM), while Tundu represented Lema. This unusual circumstance did not affect the brothers' relationship or their professionalism.
The case was heard by the Court of Appeal in Dar es Salaam, with Alute and Tundu Lissu conducting their legal work in a professional manner. Lema noted that many people were surprised to see the brothers competing in court, but he was not concerned. He even declined a request to ask Tundu to request Alute to go easy on them, citing the brothers' obligation to defend their respective positions.
Lema emphasized that the incident demonstrated the value of democracy, highlighting that individuals can hold different views, take opposing positions, and compete professionally while maintaining family bonds and mutual respect. He added that he never quarrelled with Alute and that their relationship remained strong even after Lema won the case at the Court of Appeal.
After the court case, Lema and Alute became close friends. Lema's last visit to Alute was after the latter returned from Morogoro, where he had been hospitalized. During the visit, Alute's condition was poor, and they could not talk for long. Lema had promised to visit Alute at home after his discharge but unfortunately never got the opportunity.
Lema expressed his deep shock and sadness upon learning of Alute's death, noting that his recent appearances on social media had given little indication that his condition had deteriorated so severely. Alute had spoken confidently and demonstrated sharp thinking in his online posts, which made the news of his passing even more surprising.
On November 1, 2026, Lema visited Alute's family and relatives in Arusha to offer his condolences. He stated that he would work closely with the family and relatives on various funeral arrangements and stand with them until the end. As a resident of Arusha, Lema considers the funeral to be a community event.
Lema's memories of Alute Lissu are a testament to the late advocate's professionalism and dedication to his work. His legacy will be remembered through such stories, which highlight his ability to separate his personal and professional life.
