The Lüderitz Town Council has unveiled a N$615-million strategic plan for 2026/27 to 2030/31, aiming to establish the town as an industrial and energy hub in southern Namibia. The plan focuses on local economic development, service delivery, and managing rapid growth. Mayor Brigitte Frederick stated that the strategic plan is guided by the Urban Guiding Vision for Lüderitz 2040, which directs spatial planning, housing, and sustainable urban expansion. This vision is expected to drive growth and development in the region.

Recent offshore oil and gas discoveries in the Orange River Basin and regional mining demand have sparked interest in coastal and logistics infrastructure. The town council plans to capitalize on these developments to drive growth. Frederick mentioned that the strategic plan sets out 14 objectives under four themes: institutional capacity and governance, economic growth and environmental stewardship, urban infrastructure, and social infrastructure. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that Lüderitz is well-equipped to handle its anticipated growth.

The strategic plan represents the first five-year step towards achieving the Urban Guiding Vision for Lüderitz 2040. This vision includes the extension of the town's boundaries towards Aus and upgrading utilities. Frederick emphasized that the plan demonstrates the town council's commitment to purposeful and disciplined development. The plan is expected to guide Lüderitz's growth and development over the next few years.

Acting chief executive Leonard Stephanus highlighted the challenges of translating these plans into coordinated action and securing the necessary resources for implementation. He emphasized that rapid growth puts pressure on housing, land availability, and basic services, requiring coordinated governance. Stephanus stressed that an integrated approach to planning and development is essential to ensure that Lüderitz's economic transformation benefits its residents.

The strategic plan was developed with funding from the Integrated Urban Development Project at Lüderitz and Aus, implemented by German development agency GIZ Namibia. The flagship Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project in the Tsau ||Khaeb National Park and Lüderitz–Aus corridor represents a multibillion-dollar investment to establish Namibia as a green industrial hub. This project is expected to drive growth and development in the region.

Aus has been identified as a strategic node for development and awarded a N$50-million investment for roads, electricity, water, and sewerage. The first phase of this investment will service 361 erven, preparing for an anticipated influx of around 7,500 new employees and residents. The Lüderitz harbour is also scaling up its capacity to support energy exports and regional trade, with planners emphasizing heritage protection around sites like Shark Island.

NamPower is actively building high-voltage transmission backbones and local wind/solar integration nodes to support coastal industrialisation and hydrogen valleys. ||Kharas governor Dawid Gertze emphasized that Lüderitz is at a critical juncture, and anticipated growth and expansion without proper planning would strain municipal services. The governor's comments highlight the importance of careful planning and coordination to ensure that Lüderitz's growth is sustainable and beneficial to its residents.
