Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reiterated his commitment to uniting the Mt Kenya region, stating that he will not allow political differences to divide the region. According to Kindiki, Mt Kenya elders have tasked him with ensuring the region remains united despite differences in political affiliations. He made these remarks while inspecting development projects in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri county. Kindiki emphasized that the region has historically acted as one and should remain united.
Kindiki cited previous elections where prominent leaders competed politically without violence, saying the same approach should be maintained as the country moves towards the 2027 general election. He urged leaders and their supporters to allow political competition without turning differences into conflict. The Deputy President emphasized that Mt Kenya is one region and should not be divided into East and West along political and party lines.
The Deputy President also revealed that he had taken seriously the elders' request that he avoid political insults and instead focus on development and reconciliation. Kindiki stated that he would not engage in a competition over insults, but rather let his actions speak for themselves. He highlighted ongoing government projects in Nyeri, including roads, markets, Ruringu Stadium, and electricity connections.
Kindiki announced that Nyeri county has been allocated Sh45 billion for the construction of 775 kilometres of roads across its six constituencies. He also mentioned that 32,000 homes had benefited from last-mile electricity connections, with another 12,000 households set to be connected following an additional Sh650 million allocation. These projects aim to improve livelihoods and develop the region.
During his visit, Kindiki launched the construction of roads in Chaka Township and directed the contractor to complete the works on schedule. He also cited increased earnings for farmers from coffee, tea, and milk as part of the government's development agenda. The Deputy President emphasized that the focus is on developing every part of the country and improving the lives of the people.
Kindiki also announced plans to convene a meeting with senior police officers next week to strengthen the fight against illicit alcohol and drugs in the region. This move aims to address social issues affecting the region and ensure a safe and secure environment for its residents. The Deputy President remains committed to working towards the development and unity of the Mt Kenya region.
The unity message is linked to development, with Kindiki emphasizing that the region should focus on projects that improve livelihoods rather than political divisions. He highlighted the importance of protecting and bequeathing the region as one to future generations.
