Kiambu County in Kenya has been selected to host the 2026 World Children’s Day celebrations on November 20. This decision was made by the National Council for Children’s Services (NCCS) in recognition of the county’s significant progress in early childhood development and child welfare. The event, organized by the Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Children Services, will take place at Kirigiti Stadium.
The 2026 World Children’s Day celebrations will focus on child welfare and awareness, with the theme “Prioritizing Children Now, Shaping Our Future.” Abdinoor S. Mohamed, CEO of NCCS, announced the decision in a letter to Governor Kimani Wamatangi, inviting him to appoint key county staff to collaborate with the State Department’s local coordinator. Kiambu County was chosen for its standout achievements in early learning and ongoing child protection efforts.
Kiambu County has made notable advancements in early childhood development, including the successful rollout of 545 model Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers. These centers aim to elevate early learning standards, and the county also supplies daily meals, including porridge, boiled eggs, and milk, to 52,000 students under its comprehensive feeding program. The county’s use of the Nurturing Care Framework in early childhood development has been a key factor in its selection.
The county’s systemic approach to child advocacy was another key factor in its selection. Kiambu County recently launched a Care Reform Situational Analysis initiative and is actively developing a groundbreaking children’s policy to unlock crucial funding and deliver lasting support. This policy aims to provide a framework for child welfare and development in the county.
The national commemoration in Kiambu serves to spotlight Kenya’s broader achievements in early childhood development and care reform. It will also serve as a peer-learning platform for other county governments. World Children’s Day is a United Nations initiative established to annually honor the historic 1959 adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
Commemorated globally on November 20, World Children’s Day shines a spotlight on children’s rights and welfare, provoking international efforts to solve the most pressing issues impacting young lives globally. The event will reinforce the importance of placing children at the center of national policy and mobilize both government and non-governmental stakeholders around a shared mandate of prioritizing children’s immediate needs.
The planning committee selected Kirigiti Stadium due to its central accessibility for attendees. The 2026 World Children’s Day celebrations in Kiambu County will highlight the county’s achievements in early childhood development and child welfare, while promoting a unified approach to prioritizing children’s needs and dedicating sustainable investment toward their long-term growth.
