Githunguri Member of Parliament, Gathoni Wamuchomba, has inaugurated a new science laboratory at Kagema Primary and Boarding School, funded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF). The laboratory is designed to accommodate 45 learners per session and is part of efforts to align with the Competency Based Education (CBE) pathways. The school, a hybrid day and boarding institution, is the most populous in Githunguri.
The new laboratory is equipped to support the implementation of CBE, which emphasizes developing learners' competencies, talents, and interests. The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) curriculum for Junior School includes subjects such as Integrated Science, Agriculture, and Pre-Technical Studies. As learners progress to Grade Nine, they will select one of three Senior School pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports.
MP Wamuchomba expressed her commitment to supporting the school, which requires renovation works and upgrading to cater to its growing enrollment. She commended parents for their efforts to upgrade facilities and pledged to provide additional classrooms. Earlier in the month, the MP commissioned another laboratory at Kihuririo Comprehensive School, lauding the Githunguri NG-CDF Committee for completing the project in record time.
The Ministry of Education has emphasized the need for schools to modernize infrastructure and equipment to support CBE reforms. In December 2025, Principal Secretary for Basic Education Julius Bitok stated that the government was upgrading school infrastructure and equipment to support pathway selection and prepare learners for careers aligned with their skills and aspirations.
The Ministry's 2023–2027 strategic plan identifies science kits, mobile science resources for Junior Schools, and laboratories as essential measures to support hands-on learning and CBE implementation. The government aims to ensure that schools have the necessary resources to provide quality education and prepare learners for the future.
