Hyundai Motor has announced that it will supply 15 electric buses, known as Elec City, to Marrakech, Morocco, in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). This initiative is part of an official development assistance project implemented by KOICA in collaboration with Marrakech. The project aims to support Morocco's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.
The 15 electric buses, along with fast-charging equipment and other necessary facilities, will be provided by KOICA to help Morocco achieve its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. Additionally, KOICA will offer training programs and technical cooperation to enhance the operation and maintenance capabilities of the electric buses.
The Elec City buses are the first locally manufactured electric buses in South Korea to be supplied to Morocco. These buses are expected to operate within major tourist areas in Marrakech. Hyundai Motor held a local ceremony at its factory in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, to mark the completion of the first two buses out of 15 scheduled for delivery to Morocco.
After completing the production and shipping of the remaining buses, the company plans to hold another ceremony to deliver the 15 buses in Morocco in the first quarter of 2027. The project is expected to contribute to Morocco's goal of achieving carbon neutrality and improving mobility for its citizens.
Moroccan Ambassador to South Korea, Shafik Rachadi, attended the ceremony and expressed his hopes that this project would help Morocco achieve its carbon neutrality goal and improve transportation for its citizens. He also saw it as a new starting point for cooperation between South Korea and Morocco in sustainable urban mobility.
The cooperation between Hyundai Motor, KOICA, and the Moroccan government reflects a shared commitment to promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
