Egyptian mining company Wadi Kom Ombo (Wadikco) and Huawei have signed a memorandum of understanding on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026. The agreement was signed under the auspices of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The MoU aims to develop a microgrid with a total load capacity of 0.600 megawatts at Wadikco's site in Aswan governorate. The project is expected to start commercial operation on September 15, 2027.
The solutions provided by Huawei will include solar energy technologies, battery energy storage systems, and digital energy management solutions. The project also involves training and knowledge transfer to support the provision of a more efficient and reliable source of energy at the site. The goal is to reduce diesel fuel consumption and emissions, enhancing energy efficiency and operational continuity. The cooperation will also explore electrification solutions for mining operations, including electric vehicles and battery charging solutions.
Wadikco's Chairman and Managing Director, Geologist Reda Salem, stated that this cooperation represents an important step in Wadikco's journey towards developing and enhancing the sustainability of its mining operations. Wadikco is one of the first Egyptian mining companies to adopt solar energy in its operational sites. The company aims to utilize clean energy solutions to support operational continuity and efficiency. Salem expressed his aspirations to benefit from Huawei's expertise in digital and renewable energy to develop solutions that provide round-the-clock energy in mining sites, especially in remote areas.
Huawei Egypt's Digital Energy Sector CEO, Tony Pu, said that the cooperation with Wadikco provides an opportunity to leverage Huawei's global expertise in digital energy to support Egypt's mining sector needs. Huawei has international experience in developing energy solutions for mining sites and remote areas. The company aims to transfer this expertise to the Egyptian market and adapt it to the nature of mining operations and the needs of remote sites. This cooperation opens the door to new applications of digital energy in the sector, supporting energy efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
The cooperation between Huawei and Wadikco aligns with the mining sector's trend towards improving operational efficiency and developing energy infrastructure. This is in parallel with increasing reliance on clean energy sources and digital technologies. Through this partnership, Huawei continues to expand its application of digital energy expertise to the mining sector for the first time. The solutions combine renewable energy, storage systems, power electronics, and digital technologies to meet mining operational needs, especially in remote sites.
The step confirms Huawei's direction to employ its global expertise in digital energy to support the development of Egypt's mining operations. The company aims to explore new opportunities to apply clean energy, digitalization, and electrification solutions. This contributes to enhancing energy efficiency, operational reliability, and sustainability in the mining sector. The project is expected to serve as a model for future collaborations between the technology and mining sectors in Egypt.
Key aspects of the MoU include the development of a microgrid with a capacity of 0.600 megawatts, the use of solar energy and battery storage systems, and the implementation of digital energy management solutions. The project aims to reduce environmental impact and support sustainable mining practices in Egypt. The cooperation between Huawei and Wadikco is a significant step towards integrating clean energy and digital technologies into Egypt's mining sector.
