The Forbes World’s Best Employers 2026 ranking has been released, featuring 10 African companies out of 900 global employers. South African firms dominate the list with nine entries, while Nigeria's Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) is the only representative from Nigeria. The ranking assesses how employees perceive their employers, focusing on areas such as workplace environment, talent development, and benefits.
The ranking was compiled by Forbes in partnership with Statista, based on a survey of over 300,000 employees across more than 50 countries. The assessment evaluates employee perceptions of their employers, rather than measuring employment conditions across entire countries or regions. Multinational companies with over 1,000 employees were considered for the ranking. Employees were asked to assess their employers on various aspects, including whether they would recommend the company to family and friends.
Financial services account for six of the 10 African companies on the list. Nedbank, a South African financial services group, ranks first among the African companies included in Forbes’ 2026 list. The bank operates across several markets in Africa, providing banking and financial services. Its position reflects the views gathered through Forbes and Statista’s employee survey.
The top 10 African companies on the Forbes World’s Best Employers 2026 list include Standard Bank Group, Absa Group, and FirstRand, all of which are South African financial services companies. MTN Group, a South African telecommunications company, ranks fifth among African companies. The list also features Investec, another South African financial services group, and Sasol, a South African company operating in construction, chemicals, and raw materials.
GTBank ranks seventh among the African companies included in the global ranking, making it the only company from outside South Africa in the African top 10. The bank's appearance provides Nigeria with representation in a ranking that is otherwise dominated by South African companies. Mediclinic International, a South African healthcare group, and Sanlam, a South African financial services group, complete the African top 10.
The methodology used in the ranking reflects employee perceptions of selected large employers with international operations. It does not represent a ranking of African workplaces as a whole, particularly given the size of the continent’s informal economy and differences across national labour markets. The ranking considers multinational companies with more than 1,000 employees.
The inclusion of GTBank in the Forbes World’s Best Employers 2026 ranking highlights the bank's strong reputation as an employer in Nigeria. The bank's ranking also underscores the importance of employee perceptions in evaluating employers.
