The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) has provided garage equipment to the Yei River County authorities in South Sudan to help revive tractor maintenance services and strengthen agricultural production. This initiative is part of the Community-Driven Rural Development (CDRD) project, which aims to support the repair and maintenance of eight tractors operating across the county. The equipment will enable the county to improve its agricultural productivity.
Years of conflict and inadequate maintenance facilities have left many tractors in Yei River County out of service, while the few operational machines have been overstretched, causing delays in land preparation for farmers. The equipment handed over includes an air compressor, a mobile diesel-powered welding generator, specialized mechanical toolboxes, and personal protective equipment. This support will help restore the tractors to operation, benefiting local farmers.
David Amule, Administrator of Yei County Training Centre, welcomed the support from GIZ, saying restoring the tractors would enable farmers to expand the land under cultivation. He expressed gratitude for the timely support, which will help improve agricultural productivity in the county. The equipment will be used to repair and maintain the tractors, ensuring they are ready for use by farmers.
Isaac Asiki, Director of Agriculture at the County Agriculture Department, urged the Yei County Training Centre to put the equipment into immediate use and ensure proper maintenance and management. He emphasized the importance of having the tractors operational to serve every farmer waiting in the county. The equipment will help reduce delays in land preparation and improve agricultural productivity.
GIZ estimates that repairing and returning the tractors to operation could benefit at least 3,000 farmers and support the cultivation of more than 10,000 hectares of farmland. The CDRD project will also provide training for tractor operators and farmers on the use of agricultural machinery for ploughing, harrowing, and sowing. This training will help farmers make the most of the tractors and improve their agricultural productivity.
The CDRD project is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, with co-financing from the European Union and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The project aims to support rural development in South Sudan by improving agricultural productivity and promoting community-driven development. The project will have a positive impact on the lives of local farmers and communities.
The handover of the garage equipment is a significant step towards reviving tractor services in Yei River County. With the equipment in place, the county will be able to improve its agricultural productivity and support the livelihoods of local farmers. The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on food security and economic development in the region, improving the overall well-being of the community.
