The President of the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF), Seth Ocran, has emphasized the need for Ghana to actively participate in the digital transformation of the tourism sector. On World Tourism Day, he called on the industry to adopt emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to market Ghana, better understand visitors' needs, and create new tourism experiences. Ocran stressed that technology adoption should be at the center of efforts to build a more competitive tourism industry.

Ocran highlighted that digital tools alone will not achieve the desired results without stronger cooperation among businesses, regulators, and workers. He challenged tourism operators to move beyond working in isolation and pool their efforts to improve standards, develop skills, and promote Ghana more effectively. The GHATOF President also urged the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to deepen consultations with private-sector trade associations, emphasizing that effective regulation must be supported by continuous engagement with businesses on the ground.

To attract more visitors and spread business opportunities across the regions, Ocran proposed linking the Eastern Expo with major festivals and cultural events to create a more integrated tourism calendar. He believes that greater coordination of tourism events could help expand opportunities for businesses and communities beyond the country's traditional tourism centers. This approach, he argued, would help to distribute the benefits of tourism more evenly across the country.

Ocran paid tribute to tourism and hospitality workers, from hoteliers and tour operators to drivers, guides, and food vendors, for sustaining the industry through their resilience and hard work. He acknowledged that the sector's progress would depend on what its players could achieve together, including stronger businesses, better services, and greater opportunities for communities. The GHATOF President emphasized the importance of collaboration and collective effort in driving the industry forward.

The tourism sector in Ghana has the potential to contribute significantly to the country's economy, but it requires a strategic approach to unlock its full potential. Ocran's call for the adoption of AI and other emerging technologies is seen as a step in the right direction. By leveraging technology, the sector can improve efficiency, enhance the visitor experience, and increase its competitiveness in the global market.

The Ghana Tourism Federation is expected to play a key role in driving the industry's digital transformation. As the representative body for the tourism sector, GHATOF will need to work closely with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy for the adoption of AI and other technologies. This will require collaboration with government agencies, private sector companies, and other industry players to ensure a coordinated approach.

As the tourism sector continues to evolve, it is clear that Ghana must adapt to changing trends and technologies to remain competitive. The adoption of AI and other emerging technologies presents an opportunity for the sector to transform and grow. With a coordinated approach and a commitment to collaboration, the industry can unlock its full potential and contribute significantly to Ghana's economic development.
