The Nigerian federal government has taken a significant step towards addressing the mismatch between university education and labour market demands by establishing ICT Experience Centres across tertiary institutions. The centres aim to equip students and lecturers with practical digital skills, preparing them for a rapidly changing economy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has challenged universities to rethink the quality and relevance of graduates, emphasizing the need for problem-solving ability, communication, teamwork, digital competence, creativity, entrepreneurship, and adaptability.
The ICT Experience Centres are part of the federal government's Renewed Hope Agenda, implemented through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Renewed Hope Initiative. The centres will expose students and lecturers to emerging technologies and practical digital skills, with the latest facility being a N1 billion TETFund-sponsored centre at Kwara State University (KWASU). The centre was commissioned by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented by the wife of the vice-president, Hajia Nana Shettima.
The centres are designed to provide training in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, and software development. According to TETFund executive secretary, Sonny Echono, the programme aims to expose students and lecturers to contemporary technologies and their applications in various sectors. The ultimate objective is to improve graduate employability, stimulate innovation, and enable Nigeria to participate more effectively in the global technology-driven economy.
The KWASU centre is equipped with modern computer systems, digital devices, and relevant software to support practical training, learning, and skills development. The facility is expected to become a vibrant hub for digital learning, creativity, and innovation within the university and the North-central geopolitical zone. TETFund is developing additional ICT Experience Centres across the country, equipped with modern technologies and software to respond to the rapid pace of technological change.
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, noted that the project represents another step towards expanding access to digital learning opportunities for Nigerian youths. The administration aims to create opportunities that equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate an increasingly competitive global environment. Similar centres have already been inaugurated at Ekiti State University, University of Cross River State, and Anambra State Polytechnic.
The federal government plans to extend the intervention to 15 more institutions across states, including Adamawa, Bayelsa, and Borno. This expansion demonstrates the administration's commitment to ensuring that more Nigerian youths have access to digital learning opportunities, regardless of their locations. The centres will help move Nigerian students from being mere consumers of technology to becoming creators, problem-solvers, and innovators.
