The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has made significant strides in addressing the welfare and conditions of service of its members. According to Prof. Ernest Yorke, President of the GMA, the leadership has engaged the government on several key issues affecting doctors. These engagements have covered crucial matters such as the restoration of the car waiver and the upward adjustment of the non-basic salary allowance.
Prof. Yorke made these remarks at the 68th Annual General Conference of the Ghana Medical Association held on November 6, 2026. He expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his support towards improving the conditions of service of doctors. The Minister is described as the number one champion of the cause, highlighting the government's commitment to addressing the concerns of medical professionals.
The GMA is also exploring partnerships with companies in the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) to doctors. This initiative aims to provide members with more affordable and environmentally friendly transportation options. Additionally, the GMA Mutual Health Fund is set to go live by the end of the year, offering members a new source of financial support.
Prof. Yorke announced that the GMA will be writing to the Ministry of Health for support to build up the fund. This move is expected to bring enormous relief to members who subscribe to it. The Association is also strengthening its partnership with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as with Roche and Pfizer, two leading biopharmaceutical and healthcare companies.
The partnership with these companies focuses on the training of medical oncologists abroad. According to Prof. Yorke, this collaboration is slowly but surely building roots. He expressed his satisfaction with the progress made so far, noting that the first cohort of medical oncologists being trained abroad will return to Ghana early next year.
The GMA President assured members that the leadership will continue to pursue their concerns with firmness and constructive engagement. He emphasized the importance of providing members with timely communication about progress, difficulties, and the work that remains. This commitment to transparency and engagement is expected to strengthen the relationship between the leadership and its members.
The GMA's efforts to address the welfare and conditions of service of doctors reflect its dedication to supporting medical professionals in Ghana. By engaging with the government and exploring new initiatives, the Association aims to improve the working lives of its members and ultimately enhance the quality of healthcare in the country.
