In a recent interview with the Gabon Press Agency, Yves Benoît Andecko, coordinator of the Kimba Connect project, outlined the initiative's goals. Kimba Connect is a partnership between the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Federation of Gabonese Enterprises. The platform aims to connect Gabonese startups with private companies, enabling them to respond to concrete digitalization needs. This effort seeks to support local startups in accessing markets, financing, and technical assistance.
The first edition of the Kimba Connect competition, held at the Libreville Congress Palace, drew significant interest. Out of 150 registered startups, 71 participated in the contest, with 31 selected as laureates and 14 advancing to the final round. Three companies, Moov, Cetrac, and Financia, presented challenges to the candidates. According to Andecko, the initiative addresses a significant challenge faced by many startups: accessing public and private markets. Without commercial outlets, startups struggle to ensure their long-term viability.
Kimba Connect brings together various stakeholders to support startups. Partners such as Huawei Technologies and ST Digital contribute to technical evaluation, while the Gabonese Guarantee Society and BSG are involved in the financial aspect. The platform's objective is to bring together three essential conditions: reliable solutions, adapted financing, and market access. By doing so, Kimba Connect aims to ensure that startups can provide high-quality solutions and achieve sustainable revenue.
The Kimba Connect process involves companies expressing their needs, which are then published on the platform's website. Startups propose solutions within a specified timeframe, and a jury evaluates the candidatures. The jury comprises representatives from incubators and information system directors from partner companies. Andecko emphasized that Kimba Connect's action goes beyond selecting laureates, as it seeks to enable startups to access markets, enhance their technological capacities, and generate sustainable revenue.
Looking ahead, Kimba Connect plans to organize four events annually, with the next edition featuring between ten and fifteen challenges. The platform will prioritize companies with significant needs in digital transformation, particularly in the industrial sector. The focus will be on addressing concrete needs, such as dematerialization of procedures, automation of operations, human resource management, and employee time tracking.
To ensure the effective use of financing and delivery of solutions, Kimba Connect proposes a financing framework that defines and validates project needs beforehand. Payments will be made directly to service providers chosen by the startups, under contractual clauses designed to guarantee proper fund utilization. Andecko stressed that rigorous monitoring is essential to ensure the trust of client companies, financial partners, and the long-term viability of supported projects.
The Kimba Connect initiative has garnered attention from various stakeholders, and its impact on Gabon's startup ecosystem remains to be seen. As the platform continues to evolve, it is expected to provide valuable insights into the country's digitalization efforts and the growth of its startup sector. With its focus on supporting local startups, Kimba Connect has the potential to drive economic growth and innovation in Gabon.
