The Gabonese government is accelerating plans to construct weighing and toll stations to improve road maintenance and management. Currently, the country has less than 4,000 km of paved roads out of a total of over 10,384 km. The ambition to increase the number of paved roads requires the government to strengthen its means of safeguarding and mobilizing funds for maintenance.

The Minister of Public Works, Guy-Romuald Mabicka, recently met with representatives of the Belgian company Wibra, which specializes in the construction, manufacturing, and maintenance of equipment for weighing and toll stations. The meeting explored possibilities for a public-private partnership between the Gabonese state and Wibra, which has 70 years of experience in the field.

Another company, Homintec, has also offered its services to support Gabon's road development, particularly in the construction of weighing and toll stations. In August 2025, Homintec proposed its expertise to develop Gabon's road infrastructure, including equipment that integrates traffic management systems and enables the mobilization of financial resources for road maintenance.

Experts from the Ministry of Public Works have visited Togo, Burkina Faso, and Guinea to assess the realizations of Homintec and other companies. The goal is to adopt solutions that meet Gabon's specific needs, ensuring the long-term preservation of its road heritage, improving infrastructure management, and guaranteeing transparent and efficient operation of weighing and toll stations.

The construction of weighing and toll stations is part of a broader effort to modernize Gabon's road network. The government aims to improve road maintenance and management, reducing the country's reliance on bank loans. The new infrastructure is expected to generate revenue for road maintenance and improve the overall condition of Gabon's roads.

The project has been welcomed by various stakeholders, including the private sector and civil society. The government has emphasized the importance of transparency and efficiency in the operation of weighing and toll stations, ensuring that the interests of both the state and road users are protected.

The implementation of weighing and toll stations is expected to have a positive impact on Gabon's economy and road network. The government remains committed to achieving its goals, with the project expected to be completed in the near future.
