The Algerian government is exploring the possibility of partnering with Russian companies on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, which aims to connect Nigeria and Algeria via Niger. The pipeline, spanning over 4,000 kilometers, is expected to transport 20-30 billion cubic meters of Nigerian gas to Europe annually. Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf made the announcement following talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow on October 27.

According to Attaf, the Algerian side is finalizing the contract and is in discussions with Russian companies, although the specific companies involved have not been disclosed. One potential participant is TMK, a Russian firm specializing in steel pipe production and hydrocarbon transportation solutions. The partnership would focus on the economic development aspect of bilateral relations, as emphasized by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The TSGP project has made significant progress, with Algeria's state-owned oil company, Sonatrach, launching construction work in June. The pipeline's Algerian section will follow the trans-Saharan highway corridor from the Niger border to the Hassi R'Mel dispatching center. The project is seen as a strategic partnership, not only for Algeria but also for Niger, where the pipeline will be constructed.

The potential involvement of Russian companies marks a new development in economic cooperation between Algeria and Russia. Attaf described the partnership as a "significant development in economic cooperation" and emphasized that it would go beyond just the Algerian territory. The two countries have been strengthening their ties, with a focus on economic collaboration.

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project has been in the works for several years, with the aim of tapping into Nigeria's vast gas reserves and supplying European markets. Algeria, as a major gas producer, is well-positioned to play a key role in the project. The country's energy sector has been a significant contributor to its economy, and the TSGP project is expected to further boost this sector.

While the specific details of the partnership remain under wraps, Attaf expressed optimism about the project's progress. He noted that the energy minister, Mohamed Arkab, had informed him that the agreement was nearing completion. The involvement of Russian companies is expected to bring new expertise and investment to the project.

The Algerian government's efforts to move forward with the TSGP project are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country's energy sector and increase its gas exports. The project is also seen as a way to promote economic integration and cooperation between Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger.
