The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has called on frontline marshals to maintain high standards of discipline, integrity, fairness, and professionalism while performing their duties. This was stated during a two-day capacity-building programme for frontline marshals of the RS10, Sokoto Sector Command, which took place on September 22, 2026. Mohammed, represented by Zonal Corps Marshal ACM Fredrick Ogidan, emphasized that the training aims to enhance the competence and operational effectiveness of personnel.
Mohammed highlighted that frontline marshals are the most visible representatives of the FRSC and that their conduct and interactions with motorists significantly influence public perception of the organization. He stressed that their behavior, communication, appearance, and manner of enforcement must reflect the standards expected of a professional road safety organization. The Corps Marshal also reminded marshals that wearing the FRSC uniform represents government authority and must be done responsibly.
The Corps Marshal urged marshals to apply emotional intelligence and fairness when enforcing traffic regulations, emphasizing that enforcement should not lead to unnecessary confrontation. He stated that fairness is crucial for effective enforcement but must be achieved without compromising professionalism and respect for road users' dignity. Mohammed also noted that the FRSC's mandate extends beyond traffic control and enforcement to identifying hazards, managing risks, and responding to changing traffic situations.
Sokoto Sector Commander, Corps Commander Adamu Argungu, welcomed participants and emphasized the need for continuous training due to the changing road safety environment. He identified increased traffic volumes, distracted driving, vehicle overloading, poor road infrastructure, and technological developments as emerging challenges. Argungu encouraged participants to actively engage in the sessions, share experiences, and update their knowledge and skills.
A guest speaker, retired Deputy Corps Marshal Shehu Zaki, described the programme as an opportunity for personnel renewal and reorientation. Zaki noted that the operational environment in Nigeria has changed significantly, presenting new challenges for government agencies like the FRSC. He characterized the present operating environment as "highly charged" and emphasized the importance of continuous training and reorientation for personnel.
Zaki advised participants to take full advantage of the programme, listen attentively to lectures on ethics, values, emotional intelligence, and the rule of law, and return to their commands with improved knowledge and understanding of their responsibilities. He expressed confidence that the training would enhance the professionalism and effectiveness of the Corps in serving the Nigerian public.
