The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated a plan to establish livestock development centres across the country in collaboration with state governments. This move aims to transform the livestock sector and harness its potential for economic development and improved livelihoods. The Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar, revealed this during a visit to the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) to explore areas of collaboration.

According to Alhaji Mukhtar, each state is expected to provide suitable land and identify a livestock value chain to be developed jointly by the Federal and State Governments, as well as the private sector. He noted that over 95% of Nigeria's animal resources are located in the Northern region, emphasizing the need for effective utilization of this potential. The Minister described N-HYPPADEC as a key institution supporting the Federal Government's efforts to transform the livestock sector.

The Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, stated that the Commission had commenced interventions in poultry production, animal fattening, and small-ruminant rearing through its Youth Transformation Programme. Additionally, N-HYPPADEC is training and supporting women in agriculture, including alternative feed formulation and value addition. These initiatives are part of the Commission's efforts to promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve livelihoods.

Alhaji Yelwa further disclosed that N-HYPPADEC is targeting a Renewed Hope Livestock Development Programme anchored on an integrated approach. This programme aims to provide a platform for government, communities, and the private sector to develop various livestock value chains and improve livelihoods. The proposed livestock development centres are expected to play a crucial role in achieving this objective.

The collaboration between the Federal Government and N-HYPPADEC is expected to boost the livestock sector and create new opportunities for economic growth. By harnessing the potential of the sector, Nigeria can improve food security, create jobs, and enhance the overall well-being of its citizens. The initiative is also expected to promote sustainable agricultural practices and reduce poverty.

The livestock development centres will provide a platform for stakeholders to develop and implement sustainable livestock production practices. This will include the adoption of modern technologies, improved breeds, and efficient production systems. The centres will also serve as hubs for knowledge sharing, training, and capacity building.

The Federal Government's efforts to transform the livestock sector have received commendation from various stakeholders. The collaboration with N-HYPPADEC is expected to yield positive results and contribute to the country's economic development. The success of this initiative will depend on the effective implementation of the proposed livestock development centres and the level of support from stakeholders.
