The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recently organized an awareness event in Minya Governorate, Egypt, focusing on the importance of healthy and proper nutrition for children and families. This event was part of the "Empowering Rural Communities" project, implemented by the FAO with funding from the Norwegian Embassy in Cairo and in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Solidarity as a key government partner. The project also received support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and the National Council for Women.

The event aimed to promote awareness of healthy dietary practices and encourage rural families to adopt balanced food patterns using locally available ingredients. This approach seeks to improve nutrition and health for children and families without imposing additional financial burdens on households. FAO Representative in Egypt, Dr. Jacqueline Binet, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about healthy nutrition in rural communities. She praised the efforts of the beneficiaries and their keenness to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired through project activities in their daily lives.

During the visit, Dr. Binet listened to the experiences of several beneficiaries who reviewed the impact of the training on their families and children. They explained that they had become more capable of preparing healthy and appealing meals for their children, choosing suitable ingredients, and presenting food in a way that encourages children to eat nutritious food. One beneficiary expressed gratitude for the training, stating that they had learned how to prepare healthy and attractive food for their children.

The event included an interactive discussion on the components of a balanced and healthy meal for children, the importance of dietary diversity, and methods for preparing nutritious and safe dishes suitable for children's nutritional needs at different stages. The discussion also covered ways to present food in an appealing manner that helps instill healthy eating habits from a young age. Beneficiaries showcased a variety of healthy dishes they had prepared using locally available ingredients and at a reasonable cost.

The showcased dishes reflected the participants' ability to combine nutritional value and food safety, utilizing available resources to prepare healthy and safe meals without adding financial burdens to the family budget. The event also included an educational aspect targeting children through coloring books designed to introduce them to healthy food concepts in an interactive way that combines learning and play.

The coloring books and activities helped children recognize the importance of eating a variety of foods, the benefits of vegetables and fruits, and healthy eating habits that support healthy growth. This contributes to forming positive eating behaviors from the early years. The event highlighted the importance of investing in developing the knowledge and skills of rural women as essential partners in enhancing food and nutritional security.

The FAO's initiative aims to improve the health and well-being of children and families in rural areas, ultimately contributing to building more resilient and sustainable communities. Key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Social Solidarity, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and the National Council for Women, are collaborating to ensure the project's success and impact.
