Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has been launching key infrastructure projects in Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties, aiming to secure support for President William Ruto's re-election. Kindiki cited several projects, including a Sh7.5 billion bridge, a Sh1 billion hospital upgrade, and a Sh1 billion market. These projects are designed to improve livelihoods and push back against opposition from former Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya, Mithika Linturi, and former Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The Sh7.5 billion Nithi Bridge project, inspected by Kindiki two weeks ago, is one of the key projects in Tharaka Nithi county. Kindiki argued that previous administrations, including those of former Presidents Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta, failed to construct a new bridge, despite the region's needs. The new bridge aims to reduce accidents and improve connectivity.
Kindiki also inspected the upgrade of Meru Level 5 Hospital to a Level 6 facility, costing Sh1 billion. The project will benefit people in Meru and neighboring counties by providing specialized services closer to home. Once completed, the hospital will be taken over by the national government, allowing the county government to equip other hospitals.
In addition to the hospital upgrade, Kindiki launched the construction of the Gakoromone Modern Market in Meru town, allocated Sh1 billion. The market is expected to improve incomes for farmers, traders, and other players. Kindiki also launched road tarmacking projects in Tigania and Tharaka, as well as last-mile electricity connection projects.
Kindiki emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza administration should be judged by its accomplishments, particularly in terms of impactful development projects. He cited improved government services at Huduma Centres and support for farmers through reduced farm input prices as examples of the administration's efforts.
Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma expressed support for Ruto and Kindiki, citing various development projects in the region, including the construction of modern markets, affordable housing, and student hostels. Mutuma pledged to work with other leaders to unite Meru behind Ruto and Kindiki.
Governor Mutuma also highlighted the planned construction of a State Lodge, airstrip, and golf course, which will boost connectivity, investment, tourism, and business. The County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) project is expected to promote value addition, create jobs, and provide better markets for farmers. Mutuma described Kindiki's appointment as DP as a historic achievement for Mount Kenya East.
