The Golden Gloves Foundation hosted its second development boxing tournament at Emperors Palace in South Africa on Thursday, with a clear focus on fighter safety, fair matchmaking, and skill progression. The monthly series was launched by Golden Gloves director Nivi Grogor last month. The tournament featured experienced referees David van Niewenhuizen, Simon Mokadi, and Mfundo Mvandaba, who prioritised fighter safety over the crowd's desire for action.
The referees never hesitated to step in and stop a bout when it became clear that a fighter was visibly outclassed, preventing unnecessary punishment. This approach aligns with expert opinions that ending a contest one punch too early is far safer than one punch too late. While fans and fighters often feel cheated by early stoppages, medical professionals stress that boxer safety must always come first.
Doctors Robert Selepe and Simon Brooks provided medical support during the tournament, while Lebogang Phatlane, Boxing SA's acting provincial manager in Gauteng, oversaw the proceedings. Phatlane was appointed two weeks ago, alongside veteran ring official Thabo Spampool, to oversee tournament supervision across Gauteng, the Free State, and North West.
The appointment of Phatlane and Spampool follows the resignation of the previous provincial manager, Lehlohonolo Ramagole, who has since joined Golden Gloves Foundation as general manager. The tournament featured several notable fights, including a junior middleweight bout between Liyema Njibana and Keegan Middleton, which Njibana won by unanimous points decision with judges' scorecards reading 40-36 (twice) and 39-27.
Another notable fight was the welterweight bout between Kefilwe Mogano and Vuyo Radebe, which Mogano won via a split points decision. Mogano made his professional debut, while Radebe was involved in his fourth fight. The fight was described as deserving of Fight of the Night, with both boxers showing superb conditioning.
In other fights, Mvandaba intervened to stop Thobisizwe Sithole from taking unnecessary punishment from Adneta Mabeza, while David stopped Steven Nortje from taking severe punishment from Mpumelelo Mkhumbuzi. The tournament also featured a Congolese affair between Andre Mulumba and Eric Kazadzi, which Mulumba won in round 3.
The main fight saw WBA Pan African and ABU Sadc bantamweight champ Monica "Savage" Mkandla defeat Loveness Kokka in just one minute and 55 seconds in the first round. Mkandla, trained by Vusi Mtolo, remained undefeated after 11 fights with three short-route wins, while Kokka suffered her 13th defeat in her 18th match.
