In Egypt, adhering to strict environmental standards in the industrial sector is no longer just a supplementary procedure or government requirement for factories to implement. It has become a key determinant of the competitiveness of Egyptian products in global markets, particularly in European and American markets. These markets are witnessing increasing strictness in environmental standards and controls. Sustainability, rationalizing energy consumption, and reducing carbon emissions are now prerequisites for accessing these markets.

The Office of Environmental Commitment and Sustainable Development at the Egyptian Federation of Industries plays a strategic role in this context. The office is headed by Dr. Sherif El-Gebaly, Chairman of the Chemical Industries Chamber. It serves as a crucial technical arm supporting the national industry. The office's role extends beyond helping factories comply with environmental regulations to providing practical solutions for updating production lines. It aims to improve energy and resource efficiency, reduce operating costs, enhance product quality, and qualify industrial facilities for competition and export.

Since 2005, the office has provided easy financing through a revolving loan agreement launched by the Federation of Industries in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and several national banks. Over 480 projects have received financing, totaling around one billion Egyptian pounds, with total investments exceeding 1.5 billion pounds. The office has also contributed to the application of technologies that reduce energy consumption. This has resulted in saving approximately 12.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 5,164 tons per year.

The Office of Environmental Commitment and Sustainable Development also plays a significant role in supporting the industry's transition to a green economy. This aligns with the state's direction towards building a more sustainable economy and shifting to a developmental model that achieves a balance between increasing production and economic growth on one hand and environmental conservation and rational use of resources on the other. The move towards a green economy is no longer just a slogan or an environmental commitment imposed by international agreements but has become an economic and investment necessity.

The necessity of a green economy is dictated by global changes and the requirements of external markets, in addition to the need to reduce production costs, rationalize energy and water consumption, minimize waste and losses, and improve the efficiency of using available resources. Therefore, the importance of the Environmental Commitment Office does not only lie in assisting factories in complying with environmental laws and regulations but also extends to supporting their development and modernization. This is because green industry has become one of the main determinants of the future of the Egyptian industry.

To maximize the conversion of environmental commitment into economic value, one of the most important roles the Environmental Commitment Office can play in the coming period is helping factories transition from the concept of pollution treatment after it occurs to the concept of green production from the outset. This can be achieved by introducing modern technologies that reduce the consumption of energy, water, and raw materials, limit emissions and waste, and reuse resources instead of wasting them. This will contribute to achieving direct economic benefits for factories.

Rationalizing electricity, fuel, and water consumption leads to reducing operating costs, and recycling waste allows for its utilization as production inputs. The office's role also extends to helping factories measure the carbon footprint of their products, prepare sustainability reports, and implement environmental management systems. By doing so, the office supports the industry in enhancing its environmental performance, improving competitiveness, and increasing its contribution to sustainable development.
