Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The lawmakers announced their decision on Sunday, October 4, amid growing political realignments in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections. The resigning lawmakers include Aliyu Kagara, Ibrahim Bakura, Faruk Dosara, Bashir Masama, Muktaru Kaura, Nasiru Abdullahi, Bashar Bello, and Bashar Aliyu.

The lawmakers cited insecurity, alleged injustice, and unpaid salaries and allowances as reasons for their resignation. In their resignation letters, they expressed concerns over the failure of the APC-led administration to adequately address the security challenges confronting their constituents. They also raised issues bordering on party leadership and the welfare of lawmakers.

One of the lawmakers, Aliyu Kagara, alleged that the lawmakers had gone for 32 months without receiving salaries, allowances, and other entitlements. He accused the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal of failing to give adequate attention to security challenges affecting rural communities. According to him, the lawmakers had raised concerns over insecurity affecting their constituencies but were dissatisfied with the response from the government.

However, the Zamfara State APC said it had not formally received the lawmakers’ resignation letters. The party’s publicity secretary, Ibrahim Birnin-Magaji, said the APC had only seen the letters circulating on social media and was awaiting official communication through the lawmakers’ respective political wards and local government structures.

The development adds another layer to the political situation in Zamfara, where the major parties have undergone significant realignments in recent months. The lawmakers’ resignation comes against the backdrop of earlier disputes within the state House of Assembly and changing political affiliations involving lawmakers and other political actors.

There is also uncertainty over the next political destination of the eight lawmakers. Reports have not established that they have formally joined another party following their resignation from the APC. The development could therefore have implications for the political balance in the state as parties begin preparations for the 2027 elections.

The resignation also follows previous disagreements involving some of the lawmakers and the leadership of the state government. According to reports, the affected lawmakers had previously been suspended amid allegations that they attempted to impeach the Speaker of the House about a year ago.
