Egyptian Communications and Information Technology Minister, Eng. Rafeat Hendy, recently met with members of the Communications Industry Committee of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. The meeting aimed to discuss strategic aspects of developing the communications industry in Egypt and review the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. The committee, which includes prominent leaders and experts in the field, was formed to support the development of the industry.

During the meeting, Hendy emphasized that the communications and information technology sector has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, contributing significantly to Egypt's economic growth. The sector has expanded beyond providing technological services to include vital areas such as digital infrastructure, data centers, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and local manufacturing. He added that the sector has achieved a growth rate of 19.3% during the 2025/2026 fiscal year.

Hendy reviewed the progress made in several strategic files, including the launch of the spectrum strategy for 2026-2030 and the expansion of fifth-generation technologies. These efforts aim to build high-speed and efficient communication networks, enabling the growth of Internet of Things applications and smart cities. He also discussed the development of the national data center strategy, which is expected to support the growth of the digital economy.

The minister highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence as a key driver of economic growth and transformation. He noted that AI provides opportunities for increasing productivity, creating new business models, and expanding into local, regional, and international markets. Hendy emphasized that Egypt has made significant progress in the field of digital identity, with the number of services provided through the "Digital Egypt" platform reaching nearly 250 in September.

Hendy reported that digital exports have increased by 124% since 2018, reaching $7.4 billion in 2025. He also noted that Egypt has successfully attracted major mobile phone manufacturers, with over 10 million mobile devices produced in 2025, compared to 3.3 million in 2024. The minister emphasized that the application of the mobile phone governance system aims to protect and support local industry and enhance its competitiveness.

The minister discussed the state's efforts in digital safety, which focus on awareness, legislation, and technical solutions. He mentioned the launch of the "Wa3y.net" platform and the "Atman" service, which aims to protect citizens from internet risks. Hendy also noted that the ministry is currently preparing a digital safety law. He emphasized the importance of the Communications Industry Committee in promoting coordination and cooperation among stakeholders.

The committee issued several recommendations to support and develop the national industry, including opening new avenues for developing the communications industry and addressing local manufacturing challenges. The recommendations also included studying opportunities for developing data centers and cloud computing services, expanding local mobile device manufacturing, and establishing effective mechanisms to support and encourage local products.
