A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died under unclear circumstances after an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. According to reports, Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, died on Monday, October 5, 2026. The incident has sparked an investigation by the Edo State Police Command.

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and arrested the hotel owner, manager, and the commercial sex worker involved. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, stated that the command received a report at about 8 pm on Monday that the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to ASP Ikoedem, the lecturer later asked Jacob to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found Uwuigbe lying lifeless. This prompted her to report the incident to the police. The PPRO further disclosed that the circumstances surrounding the lecturer's death are being investigated, and the arrests were part of efforts to establish what transpired before his death.

The remains of Uwuigbe have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation while the investigation continues. The university has distanced itself from the incident, stressing that the death occurred outside the university environment.

The spokesperson for AAU, Otunba Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the university but emphasized that the incident was unrelated to the institution's official activities. Aladenika described the matter as the lecturer's private affair, adding that the woman involved was not a student of the university.

The police investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be revealed as the probe continues.
