Doppio Zero, a halaal restaurant located at 102 Florida Rd, Morningside, has introduced a signature menu that showcases the creativity of its chefs. The menu, which has a fusion feel, offers customers a chance to try something different from the usual pizza and pasta dishes. Owner Muhammed, who has a warm and likable personality, welcomed food writer Ingrid Shevlin and Frank Chemaly to try the new menu.

The signature menu features a range of dishes, including seared kingklip in a rich coconut cream, charred corn riblets in a chilli and lime sauce, and a pear and walnut salad with pomegranate seeds. Chef Tahier Davis explained that the menu will change regularly and evolve seasonally. The chefs brought out a large portion of the menu for the guests to try, including three starters: spicy corn riblets, beef bao bun with Asian sesame slaw, and garden harvest salad.

The spicy corn riblets were cooked in a chilli citrus aioli with grated parmesan and fresh lime, and were a hit with the guests. The beef bao bun with sesame slaw, jalapenos, and Japanese aioli, along with a roasted garlic dipping sauce, was also well-received. The garden harvest salad, with poached pear, walnuts, pomegranate seeds, and feta, was described as exceptional.

For mains, options include lamb arayas, beef sliders, signature prawn roll, tandoori chicken with woodfired dough, spicy brisket pizza, and cajun lemon pasta. Ingrid Shevlin opted for the coconut and lime kingklip, which she thoroughly enjoyed, although the coconut sauce was rich. Frank Chemaly's fire butter fillet, cooked to perfection, sat in a bed of parmesan mash with chimichurri and was swimming in a wonderful "fire-butter".

The dessert menu is also unique, with options such as Karak French toast, velvet nest with chocolate mousse and burnt butter ice-cream, and pistachio tres leches cake. The Karak French toast, infused with cardamom, was a favorite, while the velvet nest was described as lovely. The pistachio tres leches cake was comforting and indulgent.

The guests rated the food 4 out of 5, service 3.5 out of 5, and ambience 3.5 out of 5. The restaurant, which is open from 7am to 9pm on weekdays and 7am to 10pm on weekends, can be contacted at 031 110 0420. Doppio Zero is one of only two halaal stores in the chain of 30 or more.
