Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has appealed to leaders in the Mt. Kenya region to put aside their political differences and unite, as called for by the region's elders. Speaking in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County, Prof. Kindiki stated that he has received clear instructions from the elders to ensure the region remains united. He emphasized that despite affiliations with different political formations, the region's leaders must work together to promote peaceful political contests.
The Deputy President was recently endorsed by elders from the Kikuyu, Embu, Mbeere, and Meru communities as the region's spokesperson. He stressed that Mt. Kenya is a single entity and cannot be divided into East and West, as some politicians have been pursuing. Prof. Kindiki cited the region's history, noting that it has always been united under the leadership of former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta.
During his visit to Nyeri County, Prof. Kindiki inspected various development projects worth billions of shillings. He launched the construction of Chaka Township roads and directed the contractor to complete them on time. The county has been allocated 45 billion shillings for the construction of 775 kilometers of roads across its six constituencies. Modern markets are also under construction, with most nearing completion.
The Deputy President highlighted the progress made in Nyeri County, including the Ruringu Stadium in Nyeri Town, which is currently under construction. He also noted that 32,000 homes have benefited from the last-mile electricity connection, with an additional 12,000 set to be connected following an allocation of 650 million shillings. Furthermore, farmers in the region have earned more from agricultural reforms that have increased prices for coffee, tea, and milk.
Prof. Kindiki emphasized that his focus is on developing every part of the country and improving the lives of its people. He stated that he has heeded the elders' request not to engage in insults but to be a unifying voice for the region and the country. The Deputy President also announced plans to convene a meeting with senior police officers to ramp up the fight against illicit alcohol and drugs in the region.
Leaders who accompanied Prof. Kindiki on his visit expressed their support for the government's development initiatives. Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi stated that they will back the government to ensure that the people of Nyeri County and Mt. Kenya region benefit from more development projects. They praised Prof. Kindiki for his efforts in pushing for the completion of ongoing projects and the allocation of more funds.
