The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a suspected online accommodation fraudster in Bamburi, Mombasa County. Nelson Okota Odhiambo, the suspect, is accused of obtaining Sh130,000 from a woman after falsely promising to secure her an Airbnb apartment in Nyali. According to the DCI, the victim lost the money while trying to secure accommodation for a coastal holiday, but the promised apartment never materialized.

The DCI said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may have extended the alleged fraudulent scheme beyond Mombasa to target travelers planning visits to Kilifi and Kwale counties. The suspect remains in police custody undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court. The arrest comes as the festive season approaches, with the DCI warning holidaymakers to exercise caution when booking accommodation online.

The DCI has urged travelers to verify properties, establish the legitimacy of hosts, and avoid making payments where there are indications of suspicious activity. The agency advised, “Verify the property, confirm the host’s legitimacy and think twice before making suspicious payments.” This warning aims to prevent similar incidents of online fraud targeting unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspect, Nelson Okota Odhiambo, was arrested by Nyali Sub-County detectives after investigating the alleged fraud. The DCI said Okota is accused of fleecing a female client of Sh130,000 after falsely claiming he could secure Airbnb accommodation in Nyali. The DCI remains committed to pursuing individuals involved in online fraud.

The arrest of the suspected Airbnb fraudster is a significant development in the fight against online scams. The DCI's efforts to crack down on such cases are expected to enhance public trust in online booking platforms. The agency's warning to holidaymakers is timely, given the increasing number of people using online platforms to book accommodations during the festive season.

The DCI's investigation into the suspect's activities revealed a possible larger scheme targeting travelers to various counties. The agency's proactive measures aim to prevent further incidents of online fraud. By verifying properties and hosts, travelers can minimize the risk of falling victim to such scams.

The suspected Airbnb fraudster's case will be taken to court, where he will face charges related to the alleged fraud. The DCI's successful arrest and investigation of the suspect demonstrate its commitment to tackling online fraud. The agency's efforts will continue to focus on protecting the public from such scams.
