Nigerian business magnate Aliko Dangote has announced an initiative to empower 2 million vulnerable women in Nigeria through his refinery's equity program. The announcement was made on September 24 at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Dangote's Aliko Dangote Foundation will collaborate with state governments to identify eligible women, including widows and victims of violence, to purchase shares in Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited.
The initiative is an outgrowth of Dangote's recent introduction of his petroleum refinery on the stock market, dubbed the "People's IPO." The subscription window for the IPO opened on September 14 and is set to close on October 13. A total of 4.1 billion ordinary shares are being offered at a price of 525 nairas per share, approximately $0.40. The goal is to raise up to $2.1 billion, representing about 3% of the company's capital.
The equity program for vulnerable women is part of Dangote's broader social responsibility efforts. His foundation will not only provide access to shares but also offer additional shares to be held as long-term savings for the beneficiaries. According to Dangote, the initiative aims to promote financial inclusion and support women who have been impacted by conflict and poverty.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, located in the Lekki free zone near Lagos, has been operational since 2024. The $20 billion facility processes 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day and has significantly altered Nigeria's fuel market, which previously relied heavily on imports. The refinery's operations have also highlighted the need for greater financial inclusion in Nigeria, particularly among women.
According to the World Bank, less than half of Nigerian women had active bank accounts before the pandemic. Dangote's initiative has the potential to make a significant impact on financial inclusion and women's empowerment in the country. The program's eligibility criteria and implementation timeline will be determined in collaboration with state governments.
Dangote has also expressed plans to potentially list his refinery on the US stock market within the next three to four years. Additionally, he intends to gradually introduce his conglomerate's other subsidiaries, operating in cement, sugar, and salt, to the stock market.
The Aliko Dangote Foundation has not provided a specific timeline for the implementation of the equity program for vulnerable women or detailed eligibility criteria. However, the initiative has been well-received as a positive step towards promoting women's economic empowerment and financial inclusion in Nigeria.
